On September 7, 2024, Hu Ming, President of the China Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute (EPPEI), met with Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of Indonesia’s state-owned electricity company, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), in Beijing. The two sides jointly signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on power planning research cooperation.

Hu Ming briefly introduced EPPEI’s overall capabilities, noting that as a national-level consulting institution in China, EPPEI possesses extensive planning experience and systematic research expertise. In recent years, EPPEI has conducted substantial research on energy and power planning as well as energy transition both in China and abroad. He highlighted that China and Indonesia share certain similarities in their power generation mix. However, as an archipelagic country, Indonesia faces more complex conditions in balancing power supply and demand and in developing its power grid. Hu Ming emphasized that conducting forward-looking and systematic research is essential to addressing challenges posed by the rapid integration of wind and solar. He expressed hope that this MoU would serve as an opportunity to strengthen information sharing, align research efforts, and engage in practical cooperation to support high-quality energy development in Indonesia.

Darmawan Prasodjo stated that Indonesia is formulating an updated energy transition strategy and power development roadmap. The country seeks to accelerate the large-scale development of clean energy and enhance the security of its power supply. As a main driver and executor of Indonesia’s energy transition, PLN anticipates collaborating with EPPEI on technical research in power system modeling, simulation, and planning, producing practical outcomes that will provide technical support for Indonesia’s energy transition.

PLN is a vertically integrated state-owned enterprise in Indonesia’s power sector. It is the country’s largest power generator and the sole electricity transmission and distribution supplier, accounting for over 70% of Indonesia’s total installed capacity. PLN is responsible for drafting Indonesia’s  Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).
