Central Asian countries are friendly neighbors of China connected by land and sea, as well as important partners of China along Belt and Road. In 2022, China and the five Central Asian countries jointly held the virtual Summit commemorating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, which witnessed the first collective meeting between leaders of China and the five countries in 30 years. The most important outcome was the commitment of building China-Central Asian community with a shared future, representing China and Central Asia ushering a new era of cooperation.
China and Central Asian countries have a good foundation for cooperation and obvious complementary advantages in the field of energy. In the context of global carbon neutrality, the process on energy clean and low-carbon transition has increased rapidly. Besides, energy cooperation between China and Central Asian countries has been deepened and expanded from traditional energy to new energy, energy transition cooperation becoming a new growth pole of bilateral trade, economic and investment. The prospective study of China-Central Asian countries energy cooperation will be helpful to comprehensively go through the overall situation of the national economy, energy sector and power industry in Central Asian countries, deeply exam the energy development potential in the region, and systematically analyze the basic and key areas of energy cooperation between the China and Central Asian countries, so as to carry out energy cooperation between the two sides on a large-scale, at a higher and deeper level in the future.
Report on Energy Cooperation between China and Central Asian Countries is one of China Electric Power Planning & Engineering Institute’s annual reports on energy cooperation along the Belt and Road. The report focuses on the current situation and future trend of energy development in Central Asian countries, and provides reference for more targeted and pragmatic cooperation between China and Central Asian countries. The report is consist of six chapters. The First chapter goes through the general situation of Central Asian countries, analyzing and forecasting the development of energy industry in the region. The following chapters provide in-depth information on the development of energy industry in five Central Asian countries, namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. These chapters analyze the foundation and potential of energy cooperation between China and Central Asian countries, and also put forward suggestions for the next step in the key cooperation areas.
